Corn Fed Course Crawl #2: Gibbon Valley View Golf Course (Gibbon, Nebraska)

Gibbon Valley View is a compact layout

Corn Fed Course Crawl rolls on and stop # 2 takes us to Gibbon Valley View Golf Course in Gibbon, Nebraska.

This is a course I know pretty well. I’ve played it plenty over the years, and it's become a regular stop for me recently. So this wasn’t a “first impression” round as much as it was a “let’s document it honestly” round… and boy did I document it honestly.

I went out there on a weekday in the fall, fought a classic Nebraska wind, lost a couple balls to right-side OB (out of bounds) early, visited the tall grass on # 4, and managed to shoot a 49 on a par-34 nine-hole layout.

OK, so not my proudest work. But the course itself? Still a fun little track.

Gibbon Valley View Golf Course - Quick Facts

A Valley Story

The first thing you notice at Gibbon Valley View is… the valley. It’s not subtle.

Downhill, then uphill is the theme at Gibbon Valley View

From the parking lot you can basically take in the whole property. The footprint is compact, the routing is easy to follow, and you’re immediately staring at the opening tee area and the # 9 green sitting right there like, “Alright, let’s do this.”

And then you get out on the course and realize the defining feature is baked into almost every hole: Start from an elevated tee and hit down into the valley, then play your approach back uphill to a small but not-very-flat greens.

That “downhill tee shot / uphill approach” rhythm is a huge part of what makes this course feel unique for a small-town nine-holer.

The Course's Real Defense

This place isn’t long, but it has a very specific way of punishing you.

1) The greens are small… and domed

A lot of the greens play like little turtle shells. If you’re not landing it on the right section with the right trajectory, you’re dealing with balls that kick off the sides, roll off the back, or maddeningly come rolling back down to the fairway in front of the green. And then the real fun begins when you putt...

2) Squeezing slicers

If you’re a right-handed golfer who likes to “work it left-to-right” (aka: slice it), then the opening three holes could become a house of horrors for you. Hole # 1 has seemingly two feet of rough on the right between the fairway and OB, and # 2 and # 3 aren't much better. Hole # 4 is a par 3 so you aren't hitting driver, but there is still trouble on the right, and hole # 5 has a well-placed patch of native-grass on the right side of the fairway at the perfect driving distance

Hole # 1 is a big middle finger to people that hit the ball right (AKA me)

My YouTube video demonstrates this perfectly.

Signature Holes

A few holes really define Gibbon Valley View for me:

Hole # 5: The View

While there are many elevated tee boxes on the course, # 5 is my favorite. The tee shot gives you one of the best looks on the property. And then I ruin it with my swing!

The picture doesn't do it justice, but the view from the tee on # 5 is A+
Hole # 4: The Sneaky Difficult One

Hole # 4 is a par 3 that demands your attention. Miss it the wrong way (which is any direction) and you’ll find trouble, especially with a native-grass hazard left and long that is absolutely happy to eat golf balls (ask me how I know). Don't forget the large tree guarding the green on the right. And a green that wants nothing to do with your ball staying on it.

Where is the green on # 4? I don't know either.
Hole # 6: The F***ing Tree

It’s another elevated par 3 look, and there’s a big tree positioned in a way that feels like it takes away half the target. It probably doesn’t actually take away half… but it messes with your brain like it does.

If you can hit it off the tree and into the bunker, then you have unlocked the Corn Fed Golden Hacker achievement for Gibbon Valley View. A secondary achievement would be to hit a shot out of the bunker and perfectly down an animal hole in the lip of the bunker!

That tree and I have a long history
Hole # 3: The Cart-Tipper

This hole is memorable because the fairway has a big pit right around where a lot of average drives want to land. If you don’t make it up the “hills,” you may not be able to see the green or even the pin and suddenly you are playing a blind second shot.

And don't get your cart sideways on one of these things or you might end up tipped over at the bottom of the crater

My Round

This was one of those rounds where you can feel your score trying to run away early… and you can’t really stop it.

  • I left my wedge by the # 1 green, realized it on # 2, and had to drive all the way back.

  • I hit my drive OB on # 2.

  • And followed that up by hitting my drive OB on # 3.

  • And then followed that up by hitting one into the native-grass hazard on # 4.

That’s a rough four-hole stretch no matter how “serious” you are about golf. ...And I am seldom very serious about it. I finished with a 49 on the par 34 course. That’s… not great. Even for me.

It was also very windy. The kind of wind where you keep a death grip on your hat. But I’m not going to pretend the wind is the reason I played so poorly. Nebraska wind is just part of the deal. A bigger issue on this day was an issue that plagues me most rounds... my golf swing.

Course Conditions & Pace of Play

When I played, a few greens were in poor condition, but the course overall remains in good shape and is definitely playable. The staff works tirelessly to maintain the course in the best condition possible, and their efforts are evident.

A few greens have some rough spots, but the overall condition of the course is excellent.

Like many golf courses, especially 9-hole ones, congestion can be an issue. The course often gets busy, causing the pace of play to slow significantly. The course and staff strive to ensure everyone knows they need to book tee times, but in small towns, people often prefer to just show up and play. I've even seen groups of five to eight players on the course, which can be problematic.

This isn't intended as criticism of the staff or the course; they lack the resources for course marshals to oversee activities. It's a small-town nine-hole course, and they do their best. However, be aware that if you plan to play on the weekend, you should make a tee time, and the pace of play may be slow.

Wonderful Staff But Beware Of BS

One of the standout features at Gibbon Valley View is the amazing staff, and you'll find a wide variety of food and beverage options to enjoy! It's the kind of course where the atmosphere is inviting and refreshingly straightforward.

But here's a public service announcement:

Be on the lookout for bull snakes. They're not venomous... but they can still make you jump out of your skin because they're usually huge. I didn't spot one this time around, but I've crossed paths with one before on the course, and it was in the 5–6 foot range.

I've seen both bull snakes and bull shit at Gibbon Valley View

Trust me, you won't forget seeing that slithering across the fairway!

The YouTube Video (A Bit Unhinged)

The YouTube video for this course showcases all 49 shots in all their glory! We're back to a "Masters-style" video, and, the commentary takes a wild detour into the land of nonsense (as usual for this channel).

But hey, it’s not about my not-so-stellar performance, or the commentary that’s more off-course than my golf balls. It's all about Gibbon Valley View, dissected hole by hole, shot by shot.

Final thoughts

Even though the scorecard was rough, here's my opinion of the course:

Gibbon Valley View is a solid little nine-hole course. It's got real charm (especially with the ups and downs of the elevation and valleys), a few standout holes, and just enough challenge around the greens to keep things interesting.

Gibbon's valley is charming

Swing by this course if you come to Kearney to play Meadowlark Hills, Buffalo Ridge, Nebraska Dunes, or even Elks Country Golf. Just be sure to make a tee time!

What is on tap for Course # 3? I started this endeavor late in 2025 so I only got two courses filmed, but I've got big plans for 2026, and spring is just around the corner! Stay Tuned!
